How to file ITR | Income tax return

To file an income tax return (ITR) online in India, you can follow these steps, starting from opening an e-filing account and ending with OTP verification through Aadhaar.


Open an e-filing account:

a. Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal (https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/) in your web browser.

b. Click on the "Register" button located on the right side of the homepage.

c. Select the user type (individual, HUF, etc.) and click "Continue."

d. Fill in the required details such as PAN, name, date of birth, and contact information.

e. Choose a password for your e-filing account and select a secret question and answer.

f. Enter the captcha code and click "Submit."

 

Activate the e-filing account :

a. After submitting the registration form, you will receive an activation link on the registered email address.

b. Click on the activation link to activate your e-filing account.

c. Once activated, log in to your account using your PAN as the user ID and the chosen password.

 

Prepare your ITR:

a. Gather all the necessary documents and information required to file your ITR, such as Form 16, bank statements, investment details, and other income-related documents.

Verify the ITR:

a. After submitting the ITR form online, you will be prompted to digitally sign the form using a digital signature certificate (DSC) if applicable. Alternatively, you can choose to e-verify your ITR later.

b. If you select e-verification, you can verify your ITR through Aadhaar OTP (One-Time Password) verification.

 

OTP verification through Aadhaar:

a. On the Income Tax e-filing portal, select the "My Account" option and click on "e-Verify Return."

b. Choose the option "Option 2: I want to generate Adhaar based  OTP."

c. Select the option "Generate Aadhaar OTP."

d. Enter your Aadhaar number ( if asked) and click on the "Generate OTP" button.

e. You will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number linked with your Aadhaar.

f. Enter the OTP and click on the "Submit" button to verify your ITR.
